4Disciples.com – A Call to Biblical Discipleship[edit | edit source]
Becoming a disciple CAN NOT save us.[edit | edit source]
There are no works or amount of works that we can do to make ourselves righteous (right with God).[edit | edit source]
Discipleship *is* something that naturally flows from a saving faith.[edit | edit source]
Welcome to a resource dedicated to the serious call of trying to follow Jesus Christ as Biblical disciples. In a world filled with casual Christianity, you may feel called to count the cost and embrace the radical nature of Biblical discipleship. Here we hope to explore what it truly means to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Our works, everything focused on in this website, do nothing to save us as our debt is too great and only God's gift of grace is able to save. Salvation comes from God by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Furthermore, if you DO anything in an attempt to become right with God, then you do not get that grace and end up with only your good works, which are like dirty rags (see Galations 5:4 "Christ is become of no effect unto you" and Isaiah 64:6 "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags").
The Cost of Discipleship[edit | edit source]
"If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." — Luke 14:26 (KJV)
"So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple." — Luke 14:33 (KJV)
Commentary: I believe Jesus is talking about the things that we love most in this world including our lives and saying that they need to be like hate relative to how much we love God. In fact all of our preferences for things in this world from love to hate are supposed to end up in a relatively narrow band down by the hate end of the spectrum when compared to God. Once someone begins to get to that type of mindset where God is far and away the most important, discipleship and many of the things that Jesus mentions that seem difficult flow completely naturally from that viewpoint.
"Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" — Matthew 16:24–26 (KJV)
Commentary: Denial of self and one's own self-interest is not normal in our society. We are called to be a living sacrifice for Christ. True discipleship involves surrender, sacrifice, submission, and obedience to the will of God.
The Call[edit | edit source]
Biblical discipleship is very far from the norm in our world. Are you ready to follow Jesus as Lord?
